Silence is an inheritance.
Gamirasu occupies a former Byzantine monastic retreat in Ayvalı, in the İçeridere valley. On the grounds stands an 11th-century Orthodox church.
Some of the rooms were hermits’ cells. The monastery kitchen is still there, returned to the life of the house. Gamirasu has received travellers since 1999.
Thirty-five rooms and suites are hollowed out of the rock itself. One sleeps inside the mountain, in a coolness of stone and a soft darkness.
The valley has been inhabited since prehistory. An obsidian workshop and pottery from the time of the Assyrian trading colonies, around 2000 BC, have been found here.
This page draws on public sources: the house’s website, its own publications and the press. We are confirming it with its hosts; it will be completed with their replies.
